Workshops
Bring a free financial safety workshop to your community
An hour that helps your members protect their retirement savings — and their family’s harmony at the same time.
We come to you, anywhere in Sydney. There is no cost, and nothing is sold in the room.
Email hello@mylastingplan.com with your group’s name, roughly how many people, and where you are. We will reply and we can find a date that suits.
A question most of your members cannot answer
If someone made a large withdrawal from your bank account, would you find out — and how soon?
Weeks? Months? That is where the session starts, and by the end everyone in the room knows how to change the answer.
Why this matters for your members
Financial safety is part of retirement wellbeing, not a separate worry.
Retirement planning asks how much you have and how long it will last. It rarely asks whether it is safe. Yet money lost at seventy-five cannot be earned again, and what tends to go with it is independence.
The transactions that do the damage are rarely dramatic ones.
- A regular transfer nobody questions, because it has always been there.
- A direct debit for something that was never set up.
- A pension arriving in a different account.
- One large transfer the bank treats as authorised — because, on paper, it was.
Any of these can run for months before anyone looks. Elder financial abuse rarely begins with bad intentions. It usually starts with blurred boundaries, because families are never shown what safeguards to put in place.
The Australian Institute of Family Studies estimates that 84,000 older Australians self-report financial abuse every year. To put that in perspective, there are around 17,000 house fires a year across the country.
Every home has a smoke alarm. Almost none has a financial one.
What your members will walk out with
- How to set up a financial safety network with the people they love — who to involve, and how to bring them together before anything is wrong.
- How to delegate responsibly — letting someone help with your money without handing over control, and the rules to set first.
- What to do, and who to ring, if something does not look right.
They learn how transparency, connection and structure close the financial safety vulnerability gap that opens quietly with age. Small changes in memory. In health. In who is around day to day. That is how irregular transactions slip past unnoticed.
The network is also a deterrent. This is much harder to start in a household where somebody else is already looking.
Who runs it
David Choi is the founder of My Lasting Plan. He spent twenty years managing money professionally, most recently as Director of Portfolio Construction at AustralianSuper.
The safeguards that protect money at an institutional level — two people signing off, someone independent able to look at the books — do not exist in most family homes. That gap is what this work is about.
What it costs you: nothing
No fee, and nothing sold.
What we do ask for is ten minutes at the end. The session closes with a short look at TrustCircle, the tool we are building — the one that lets the people you choose see your accounts without being able to move money. It is a prototype, and we want to know what the people it is built for make of it.
That is the whole exchange. Your members get the hour, and we get something we cannot buy: feedback from the people it is being built for.
What we need from you
- A room in Sydney with a screen and somewhere to plug in a laptop
- An hour
- Anywhere from a dozen people to a full hall — the session works either way
That is all. You do not need to prepare anything, and we are happy to provide a flyer for your noticeboard or newsletter.
It is practical, not frightening
The subject is serious, and the session is not. Nobody is asked to share anything personal, nothing is dramatised, and people leave with three things they can actually do rather than a new thing to worry about.
Arrange a workshop
Email hello@mylastingplan.com with your group’s name, roughly how many people, and where you are. We will reply and we can find a date that suits.
Not an organiser? If you would like to attend a session rather than arrange one, email us where you are and we will let you know when there is one near you.
